Uninvited Guest

My heart was pounding. I was sure I had seen the doorknob turn. Gees, I thought. This guy wouldn’t give up. This was the third time this week. I ran and yanked open the door. The guy was huge and ugly. He was 6’7” with a very scared face.

“Give me it,” he demanded.

I did the smart thing and shut the door. I had no idea what he was talking about.

When I woke up the next morning, everything seemed normal. I ate breakfast in silence. When I was just about to go to work I heard it. People were coming into my home. I ran down the steps. Work was now the last thing on my mind. There it was. A huge army of zombies, vampires, and other strange animals I couldn’t name were bursting into my house. Leading them was the huge guy who had asked for something the night before.

I guess they had taken matters in their own hands to get whatever they wanted. I stood there not knowing what to do. My thought was to have them take whatever they wanted then hopefully they would stop bothering me. Immediately, zombies surrounded me and pinned me to the ground. It took awhile but eventually they apparently got what they wanted because they left.

Everything seemed normal at work that day. My excuse for being late was a doctor’s appointment. It took all of my will to keep my mouth shut and to not freak out knowing zombies and vampires were real.

When I got home that day, I went upstairs to check on my wife’s necklace. This necklace was the only thing that had been salvaged from the fire that had destroyed my family, my happiness, and everything I everything I had ever owned. When I got upstairs, I was shocked to find the necklace’s case empty. I was so mad I was about to explode. There was only one conclusion. The army of zombies and vampires had stolen it.

Just then I heard a knock on the door. I tore down the steps. If it was the huge ugly guy, I was ready to fight him for the necklace. When I opened the door, I was severely disappointed not to find him. Instead I found a really different guy. He was the same height and same weight but had a very god-like face.  He told me he was the good king.

“We need to talk,” he said.

“Umm…sure,” I stammered. I went in and prepared some tea.

“You have met my twin, I take it. He took something from you. What was it”? He demanded.

“He took my wife’s necklace. Why?”

“Darn it. The necklace was the key to bringing back their king and if their king returns, they can take over the world. Your wife was our keeper. We entrusted her with the key. Your house burned down because of them. She sacrificed herself for us.  Now I need someone to sneak into the king’s palace and steal the necklace back because I will be needed in the battle outside. So, are you in?”

“Only for my wife,” I said.

When I went outside, I was in a little shocked to find that I was leading an army identical to the arm that had come to my house the day before.  “Let’s go save the world,” I said.

We were running across town at blinding speeds and yet no one seemed to notice.

When I asked our king he said, “It’s the power of their king. He doesn’t want them to get involved because they would side with us. We’re not connected to the outside world at all.”

When I saw the castle, my heart dropped about five feet in my chest. It was huge and was literally rising out of the ground right in front of my eyes.

“And that my fellow fighters, is the rise of their king,” I said.

They wasted no time with the battle. As soon as we came in sight, the other side sent out their army of monsters. We met their army with our army. I hung back looking for an entrance. The only entrance I found was the main entrance, which was open. I crept around the intense battle and straight toward the main door. I saw the people shouting and chasing at me from behind. I ran to the wall quickly. It was closing. I was on it now. I fell into the palace because the wall was basically standing up. I was in. The wall clanged shut.

There wasn’t any immediate security, which was a good sign. I was in a huge marble hallway with stone pillars. I flew down the hall. At the end, there was an elevator. I looked at the buttons and pressed the one that read “King’s Chamber.” It took me up two flights. When the doors opened, I was shocked. It was most magnificent room I had ever seen. The evil king was sitting on a throne. He was the zombie-like thing that had come to my house and stolen my wife’s necklace.

He said, “Well, well, well. What do you want?”

“Give me the necklace.” I said.

“We’ll have to battle for that,” he said.

He was on me in a second. He drew his sword. I grabbed the nearest thing to block it – a lamp. That’s when I saw it, the necklace. It was hanging from something that I couldn’t see. Sparks flew. Lamps were broken. Finally I got a swing at his head and he fell down unconscious. I ran to the necklace. I didn’t want to do it but I knew I had to for the good of the world – I threw it into the fire. The king sank into the ground.

I walked out of the castle like I owned the world (I pretty much did because I had just saved it).  When I got out, the people stared at me in shock.  I think they knew that I had just defeated their king.

I said to them, “Scatter.  Your king is dead.”

Just like that, they left.  You couldn’t imagine the cheers that went up from my soldiers.  I knew they owed me a lot but I was glad to do it for them.  The castle started to sink into the ground just like the king had.  I knew that we had just won the battle of the century.  The soldiers immediately rushed to me and picked me up off the ground, carrying me around.  We paraded to my house where a big party was thrown.

I found the good king enjoying himself.

I had one question for him.  “Why couldn’t you do that earlier? Destroy it earlier?” I asked him.

“I have destroyed it earlier but it always re-forms. It’s my job to find it and give it to good hands. I was thinking. Do you want to be our next keeper?”

“Heck yes,” I responded.
